A power of attorney is how you let someone act for you in another country: sell a property, manage a bank account, handle an inheritance, sign for a company. Before a foreign office will accept one signed in Florida, it needs an apostille from the Florida Secretary of State. We notarize the power of attorney, check it, hand-deliver it to Tallahassee, and send the apostilled document back to you. The price is $275 for the first document and $125 for each additional one.
How a power of attorney gets an apostille in Florida
A power of attorney is a private document, so the state does not apostille the document itself. It apostilles the signature of the Florida notary who notarized it. That makes the notarization the part that decides whether the apostille is issued. The Secretary of State requires a complete notarial statement, in English, from a Florida notary. If the notarization is missing, incomplete, or not in English, the document comes back without an apostille.
We notarize powers of attorney ourselves, in person at our Boca Raton office, at your location with on-site service, or by video. Then we review the document and submit it the same way we submit everything else: hand-delivered to the Secretary of State, not mailed.
Why we recommend our notary
A notarization done by an outside notary is the most common reason a document comes back: a notarial statement left incomplete, wording that is not in English, a stamp with no date or venue. We check every document before it goes to Tallahassee and tell you if we find a problem. What we cannot do is correct another notary's work. Only that notary can, and some will not. When we notarize it ourselves, it is done to the state's standard.
Signing outside Florida
If your power of attorney was notarized in another state, the apostille comes from that state, not Florida. We handle those as well, at the same base price; some states add their own charges, which we confirm before you pay.
A power of attorney notarized outside the United States cannot be apostilled in Florida or in any other U.S. state.
Apostille or legalization
Countries that belong to the Hague Convention accept an apostille. Countries that do not belong to it require legalization instead: Florida issues a certification rather than an apostille, and the document then goes through further steps that can include the U.S. Department of State and the country's embassy. We handle both. Choose the country on the order form and it shows the price for that route before you pay.
